INNER COMPASS

Katalin Haász (Hungary) & Katalin Gály (Slovakia) GEDOK, Karlsruhe, January 2020

The current exhibition offers two artistic approaches to the topic of mask – cultural compass. Both artists start with the assumption that as a work of art the contemporary mask is in fact a visual object, representing the tension between a past and current understanding of the world.

Haász Katalin: the pieces of her Masks series are geometric paper effigies in pastel, allowing free passage between two and three dimensional space and between personal substance and a dramatic character as ‘persona’. Gály Katalin: the central video piece of the My Inner Compass installation presents the perpetual transformation of masks showing man's internal constellation in various existential situations, where the protagonist tries to preserve her inner freedom.
