WorksVeil seriesBlack Square
One hundred years ago, during World War I, Malevich painted Black Square and Wittgenstein wrote Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. I suspect that these two works sprang from the same basic ideas and Weltanschauung. To my mind Suprematist thinking and the philosophy behind Tractatus lie somewhere along the axis of utopia and prophecy. Both works greatly influenced thinking and the arts, although they failed to have a truly lasting impact. At this exhibition I hope to create a visual representation of the substance of the two masterpieces.
6.4312 Not only is there no guarantee of the temporal immortality of the human soul, that is to say of its eternal survival after death; but, in any case, this assumption completely fails to accomplish the purpose for which it has always been intended. Or is some riddle solved by my surviving for ever? Is not this eternal life itself as much of a riddle as our present life? The solution of the riddle of life in space and time lies outside space and time. (It is certainly not the solution of any problems of natural science that is required.)
6.4311Death is not an event of life. Death is not lived through. If by eternity is understood not endless temporal duration but timelessness, then he lives eternally who lives in the present. Our life is endless in the way that our visual field is without limit.
Making a reference to the square, for the exhibition I plan a 2x2 m pastel drawing on paper. The image of drapery with a trompe-l’oeil effect would be cut to shape and suspended some 30 cm from the wall with a hole in the middle, making visible another image hung on the wall.
